Ga They have always concerned themselves with the proper structure and function of the spine and nervous system. Even subtle changes in the spine are of concern to the Chiropractic Doctor. We treat the human spine with adjustments to remove subluxations. Suppose that the spine has lost one of its normal curves, gained an extra curve, or that one or more of the bones has twisted out of its normal position. This change can have an effect on the spine, nerves, and the whole body. They have termed these spinal changes "subluxations". A subluxation may cause pain, headaches, low back pain, leg pains, etc. Maybe it will show as numbness in the hand or foot. Perhaps it will be more subtle, nothing more than a lack of coordination or strength in the right leg, almost unnoticed. Or, with more subtlety, a reduction of local blood flow to the stomach, killing stomach lining cells, leading to ulcers. Spinal subluxations leading to ulcers? Yes.
The human spine has about 33 bones. Seven in the neck, twelve in the mid-back, five in the low back, five in the sacrum, and up to five in the tail bone or coccyx. There are more segments in the tail bone of those who are able to hang from trees but they do not read my column. There are only seven segments, however, in the neck of the giraffe, but, they are very long bones. In fact, all mammals have only seven bones in the neck. In addition to the bones there are ligaments, tendons, muscles, discs, and the all important spinal cord and nerves. The spinal cord is important because it carries the messages between the brain and the body. Think of it as the phone system between the headquarters (brain) and all the branch offices (body). If the head office wants you to jump, the idea begins in the brain, works its way to the spinal cord, down through the spinal column, out through the nerves at the low back, to the nerves of the legs, to the muscles of the legs, and the branch offices jump. If you step on a tack the signal follows the reverse route from the sole of your foot to the spinal cord to the brain to say "pain in the right heel, sharp, severe, better send reinforcements."
